Twenty-five paths to one breath.
From the ancient (Nadi Shodhana, Bhramari, Ujjayi, Sheetali) to the modern (4-7-8, box breathing, coherent breathing). Each one is timed precisely. Each one is your tool.
Don't see what you need?
We'll write one for you in about ten seconds — phase-by-phase, for exactly the feeling you described.
The science of breath — and why it works
Pranayama — the formal study of breath — is older than 2,500 years. It was codified by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras as the fourth limb of yoga, but its practice is older still: woven through the Upanishads, the Tantric traditions, the Buddha's anapanasati, the Sufi dhikr, and the meditative breathing of Tibetan and Jain monastics.
What modern science adds is the why. Extended exhalation activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the vagus nerve, slowing heart rate within seconds. Equal-phase breathing at roughly six cycles per minute maximises heart rate variability — the most reliable marker of autonomic resilience. Humming (Bhramari) increases nasal nitric oxide by fifteen-fold, improving oxygen delivery. Alternate-nostril breathing measurably modulates hemispheric brain activity. The double-inhale "physiological sigh" reduces acute anxiety faster than any other technique Stanford has tested.
The ancient practitioners had the experience. We now have the instrumentation. Both are saying the same thing: the breath is the bridge between the body you have and the mind you are. Cross it slowly, on purpose, and your nervous system listens.
